(The utopian connection)
FIN-I is an experiment of a multilingual show, being performed by a fixed actress and a guest actress from the place where it is performed. The piece investigates the possibility of making a universal play without the need for translation.
Is it possible to work as an actor in different places of the world? How much are we limited in our profession if we cannot speak the language of the place where we perform? Is the use of subtitles the only way to tour? How can we find an alternative to the use of English to resolve the artistic encounter between different cultures? What kind of power structure is the use of that language establishing? What universal conversations should a theatre play cover today?
FIN-I is an experiment of a multilingual show, which does not require subtitles, being performed by a fixed actress and a guest actress from the place where it is performed. The performance tries to investigate the possibility of making a universal play without the need for translation.
The text is said in Spanish and in a second language that changes depending on what the majority of the audience in the space understands. Swedish is the language we are currently working with.
Physical theatre, dance, videos and soundscapes are the universal languages that this show embraces.
Two women deprived of their liberty are forced to work with numbers and data inside underwater capsules. They can't talk to each other, they are physically isolated and they don't even speak the same language. But they need to connect with each other, so they find another way: through dreams. This surreal yet realistic experience makes them stronger to go against the global power structure that is around them.
Inspired by the imaginary world of the surrealist painter Leonor Fini, it warns about the danger of a society in bubbles when there is no massive fight for their rights.
This a reminder that time is not a line, history always repeats and nothing should be taken for granted.
